Shade grown coffee outperforms in sustainability and taste

Sun-grown coffee systems can suffer up to twice the soil loss compared to shaded systems.

The traditional shade-grown system used by our Guatemalan partners consists of producing coffee beneath a canopy that truly mimics forest conditions.

Although the shade-grown system can yield less coffee per crop, it outperforms sun-grown systems in sustainability and taste. This traditional method offers several environmental benefits, such as creating natural habitats for species and increasing the number of species and biodiversity.

This cultivation method requires less tillage and agrochemical use and can help maintain soil structure and fertility.

Moreover, the soil itself incorporates carbon from matter that accumulates and breaks down over time. The presence of trees on shade-grown coffee farms can help keep carbon out of the atmosphere.

Shade-grown coffee often tastes better because the tree canopy slows down how quickly the coffee fruit grows and ripens. This extra time helps the beans offer a smoother body and balanced acidity.
